Longer hair tends to separate and show the scalp, so most barbers will steer you shorter at the sides and a little shorter on top. Ask for texture on top rather than a heavy, flat finish.

A matte clay or paste gives hair more grip than a shiny gel. Use a small amount, work it in with your fingertips and push the hair forward rather than back.

Book the next cut before you leave. Short styles lose their shape in four to five weeks.
